Most of us would be willing to tolerate delays with our hot water heater when we need to do our dishes or get ready in the morning. This is a common problem however.
If you have noticed that your water is heating more slowly, it is important to seek assistance. If there is a problem with your hot water heater, or with your plumbing you need to consider seeking immediate help before damage may occur.
The reason for this is a combination of the set-up of your house and the functioning of your cold water valve, which so far has been inadequate.
The first mistake is that the cold water valve is separate from the hot water valve:
This means that cold water enters the incoming pipe before it reaches the heat exchanger. As long as there is water in the house, most of it is lukewarm and takes more time to get hotter than if no water was left in the pipes.
The second common error is that a significant amount of hot water has already disappeared into cold pipes before turning on your tap. This means that the rest of your hot water has to heat up through a higher temperature than it would have had if you had turned on your tap immediately after the last hot water you used.
The solution to this problem is simply to open the cold water valve and allow it to run for a minute or two before taking a shower or running any other type of hot water use. Try turning it off when you are finished, and then turn on your hot water tap right away. This will ensure that enough hot water will be left in the pipes to heat up all of the hot water in your house.
