TheDevHome - SOPA/PIPA/ACTA Blackout
I'd Like to take this moment to tell you about the SOPA, PIPA, and ACTA bills, as well as their connection to the impending PCIP bill.
The first two bills, I will assume you have heard about by now. They were proposed to Congress in order to stop internet piracy of copyrighted materials. However, the bills were not written as such - it was a censorship bill. The manner in which the bills were laid out posed a huge threat to internet freedom. To use an old expression, you wouldn't even be able to wipe your own nose without the Government watching over your shoulder. Not good.
Recently, the SOPA and PIPA bills were shelved. A large enough part of Congress refuses to support the bill, meaning that even if the two bills were brought back to the table, they would not be able to receive the support within Congress that would be required to override the President's unflinching veto of the bill (President Obama has expressed sincere disapproval over the manner in which SOPA and PIPA were to be enacted). However, we're not out of the woods yet. There are still MANY more threats out there. Not only is the ACTA bill (which would have about the same impact as SOPA/PIPA) still lurking in the shadows, there is also the PCIP bill to worry about. The PCIP bill is an anti-Child Pornography bill which ordinarily I would back 1000% - but the thing that worries everyone is the idea that the legislators who represent RIAA and MPAA might copy and paste the ENTIRETY of SOPA/PIPA onto the tail-end of the PCIP bill - clearly, nobody's about to veto an anti-Child Pornography bill.
In the spirit of expressing disapproval at these underhanded tactics, I have blacked out TheDevHome's main page.
